The country’s leading station for discerning listeners, Joy 99.7FM has officially launched a Road Safety Campaign to help reduce the carnage on our roads.The campaign which was launched at a ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra Thursday is in partnership with Newmont Ghana, Vodafone Ghana, Glory Oil, Enoc Oil, Promasidor Ghana, C. Woermann Ghana Ltd with the support of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ministry of Transport.The campaign as explained by Max Fugar, Sales Manager of Joy FM in an interview with Myjoyonline.com is targeting four key areas and it will “recruit 20,000 drivers as agents of change who will commit to the use of seat belts – also encourage their passengers to use seat belts; they will pledge not to use their phones while driving; they will pledge not to drink and drive; and they will pledge not to drive beyond permissible limits.”About 50,000 stickers have been produced for the 60-day campaign of which at least 20,000 drivers are expected to adhere to these simple road rules. Interested persons will be allowed to sign up for the campaign and during that period those who fail to adhere to these rules will be monitored and action taken against them.Drivers who excel will win lovely prizes including free fuel from Glory Oil.The Deputy Minister for Transport, Mrs Dzifa Attivor who launched the campaign commended Joy FM for the initiative. She disclosed that the Ministry in collaboration with the DVLA has established a Driver Academy to re-train commercial drivers. The academy, according to her, is aimed at helping reduce the carnage on our roads.Mrs Attivor called on transport unions to do spot checks on drivers to prevent them from drinking be before driving and also not to exceed the speed limit. She was the first person to sign on onto the campaign, after it was launched on Thursday.
