A Tarkwa Circuit on Monday, November 28, adjourned to Monday December 5, a case involving a chief who allegedly shot and killed a one-year-old baby and injured three others as he fired a musket at the funeral ceremony of another chief.
A very remorseful looking Nana Kwesi Boadi II, 58, who is chief of Tarkwa-Breman sat in court as the Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ransford Ninson described the incident as a likely accident.
On Saturday, November 26, Nana Kwesi Boadi’s musketry as part of the funeral ceremony of the late chief of Wassa Anyinabirem, hit four persons including one-year-old Bless Tetteh and his mother Victoria Kwaw.
Little Bless died the same day at the Ateku Hospital. His mother 38, George Kwetey, 38, and Emmanuel Bortey, a 14-year-old JHS two student are however on admission at the Central Regional Hospital in Cape Coast where they are said to be responding to treatment.
Nana Kwesi Boadi has been charged with murder and causing harm.
Presiding Judge at the Tarkwa Circuit Court, Samuel Obeng-Diawuo remanded the chief into custody and explained the suspect had to be remanded for his own safety because some residents were furious and could harm him.
He however added that matters of such nature needed to be handled cautiously so that justice would be served.
It was a solemn atmosphere in the packed courtroom as several chiefs, relatives and well-wishers including the Queen Mother of the Wassa Fiase Traditional Council came to lend support to the chief. Some chiefs attempted to persuade journalists not to publicize the matter.
The Wassa Fiase Traditional Council is said to have been badly hit by the incident and are praying for clemency.
