A Security Analyst is sceptical the Dagbon crisis could be resolved without the contribution of politicians. Dr. Emmanuel Bombade believes the very activities of the politicians make it almost impossible to ignore them in the search for lasting peace in Dagbon. His scepticism comes only a day after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II cautioned politicians to stay away from the protracted conflict between Abudus and Andanis in Tamale. The Asantehene was convinced the activities of politicians have only served to deepen the crisis and have made the search for peace an eternal illusion. He said the politicians - especially the New Patriotic Party and the National Democratic members - must stay away so he could resolve the crisis with his committee of Eminent chiefs. But speaking to Joy News, the Executive Director of the West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP) Dr. Emmanuel Bombande said there can be no real peace in Dagbon without the active participation of politicians. “The activities of politicians create unintended consequences. I do not think the politicians deliberately go out to stoke the fires. But by its character and alignment, the political divide seeks to assure the gate they are aligned with that they are doing every thing possible for the settlement of the conflict to favour that political divide. And in pursuing that political trajectory it produces an unintended consequence that frustrates the needs of the traditional approach to respond to the conflict. “And to that extent you cannot limit the search for sustainable peace in Dagbon just to the limited traditional pursuit – which is very important, no body is arguing with that - but you now need to be very comprehensive to involve all stakeholders...” “...How do you tell politicians to back off indefinitely when they are meeting their constituents; Dagbon will always be on the table. He said many youth groups in Dagbon continue to demand from politicians a lasting solution to the crisis which makes it all the more difficult for the key actors to be relegated to the core in the search for peace in the troubled region. However, representatives of the feuding ethnic groups think Otumfuo’s admonition could not have come at a better time. Dr. Ziblim Idi spokesperson of the Abudu Royal Family said at a time when the government has ordered military forces to superintend the enskinment of a regent of Savelugu contrary to the roadmap drawn by the eminent chiefs, the caution by the Asantehene could not be more timely. He conceded that in the reign of the NPP some actions were taken which also gave the impression that the then ruling government was in support of the Abudus, stating, “two wrongs don't make a right.” He said the culture of impunity which is now rearing its head must stop, adding, the Asantehene’s call must be taken seriously. A spokesperson of the Andani Youth group Andani Mahama told Joy News they are not happy with the meddling of politicians in the ethnic feud. He however dismissed assertions that the enskinment of the Savelugu regent was imposed by government and supervised by the military. He said the enskinment was purely customary supervised by elders of the family.
