The Environmental Protection Agency says it is will ensure that oil and water contained in a sinking vessel off the shores of Prampram in the Greater Accra region is safely pumped out.
The ship is said to have accumulated tons of water weeks after it was taken there to be scrapped.
Residents earlier told Joy News owners of the vessel could dump toxic waste into the ocean.
But officials from the Navy and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) moved in to avert any such activity following the Joy News alert.
Head of Tema EPA, Irene Heatcote, told Joy News residents have little to fear now.
“We have in there in the compartment oil and water and we are praying that if we don’t take out the oil and there is another leak from another point of the vessel you get the oil going out into the sea. So we are manually fetching the oil and water mixed together from the compartment into drums and bringing it ashore,” she explained.
Ms Heatcote also said the EPA is meeting with National Security to ensure the vessel is safely disposed of.
