Two armed robbers who for some time now have been terrorizing people in the Berekum municipality, have been sentenced to a total of 23 years.
The duo, Kwame Boateng, 29 and Joseph Kwabena Jumah, 32 were convicted on five counts by the Berekum Circuit Court chaired by Mr. LB. Akwantey on their own plea.
Their charges are conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry, causing damage to property, stealing and possessing instruments intended or adopted for unlawful entry.
Briefing the media here, the Berekum Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Edward Oduro-Kwateng said the robbers were arrested on November 2,2011 upon a tip-off.
He said the police acting on a tip-off intercepted a taxi cab with Boateng on board, adding that a search on the cab revealed a single barrel pump action gun, four pieces of cartridges, two screw drivers and a double-edged dagger concealed in a fertiliser sack in the trunk of the car.
ACP Oduro-Kwateng said that during interrogation, Boateng claimed ownership of the items and mentioned Jumah as his accomplice.
The police, he stated proceeded to the residence of Jumah at Koraso, a suburb of Berekum where a search in his room revealed a single pump action gun and a single barrel Baikal shot gun hidden in the ceiling of the room.
ACP Oduro-Kwateng stated that the two convicts with another at large, broke into the store of a licensed arm dealer at Berekum and stole some weapons from the shop and an amount of GH¢600.00 kept in a drawer which 200 Ghana cedis was later retrieved from them.
According to the Police Commander, the robbers were able to enter the store by removing the roofing sheets of the store to gain access to the room.
ACP Oduro-Kwateng thanked the public for their cooperation in arresting the robbers and assured that informants' identity would be kept secret.
