In the face of mounting challenges in meeting the needs of orphans in communities, the children of Fountain Gate Chapel in Kumasi are showing an example for society to care a great deal about the less-privileged.
In this season of love, the children put to work what they learn in Church by reaching out to inmates of the Kumasi Children’s Home with assorted foodstuff and toiletries through a fundraising activity they undertook in church.
Florence Ayamba of the church’s Children Department says the children are also holding a fair to play, share and fraternize with other kids within the catchment.
“In talking to them (children) about love, they have come to realize that in loving, you don’t have to just love your fellow rich but the people out there will also need our love as well… For you to love an orphan, the blessings are more,” she said.
The Children’s Home accommodates 122 inmates, majority of who are abandoned children of mentally-challenged parents
Threat to the safety of inmates by their colleagues who have mental defects, inadequate staffing and transportation are some of the challenges facing the home.
According to Home Supervisor, Victoria Asugnya, running the home on limited philanthropic and government support is becoming increasing difficult.
She has called on society to show more compassion to people whose conditions have led them to abandon their children.
A pastor of Fountain Gate, Stephen Opoku emphasized the need for churches to engage communities in social-economic and spiritual activities to entrench a holistic ministry.
