The District Chief Executive for Nadowli, Abu Kangsangbata, says he will hold chiefs and assembly members accountable for maternal deaths in the area.
According to him, it is their responsibility to ensure that pregnant women in their communities visit antenatal to enable them have safe delivery.
He’s hoping the move will enable the assembly achieve its goal of zero tolerance on maternal deaths.
The DCE said it is the policy of the NDC government to bring decent and quality healthcare services to the doorstep of the people irrespective of one’s location, Joy FM’s Upper West Regional correspondent, Rafik Salaam, reported.
Mr Abu Kangsangbata noted: “It is the responsibility of Assembly Members, Unit Committee Members, chiefs and opinion leaders to ensure that pregnant women attend antenatal services or care. We will not tolerate any woman who dies in the process of delivery. The chiefs, Unit Committee Members, Assembly Members will certainly be held accountable.
“This is a convention, it is not a law, but you do agree with me that a long standing convention virtually becomes a law.”
