Ace investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas has decried the devastating image of Ghana owing to activities of fraudsters he says are based in the country.Anas, who is credited with numerous life threatening yet revealing exposés in the country and abroad, told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show the way and manner unscrupulous persons are eroding Ghana’s good reputation is “worrying”.Speaking on his latest series of investigations with Al Jazeera, dubbed Africa Investigates on Monday, Anas, who works with the New Crusading Guide, told host of the programme Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah that most of the victims of fraud are foreigners who, based on their bitter experiences, do propagate stories which further batter Ghana’s image. He described the situation as “really bad”.One of the areas these fraudsters operate is the mining sector, with concentration on gold, he said.In his work - Illusionary Pot of Gold and Fool's Gold – it was evident that Ghana, the second largest producer of gold on the continent, is now home to a large network of gold fraudsters. Investors are said to have lost millions in their hands.In Ghana, the complex network is composed of lawyers, police officers, customs officials, banking institutions, government offices and officials, politicians and traditional rulers, Anas revealed.Anas Aremeyaw Anas said such ignoble activities are fast affecting successive governments’ quest to persuade foreign investors to establish themselves in Ghana.“The image of this country is really going bad. When you look at scams, we are quite high up there because of some of these activities. And it’s hurting that, sometimes not always, there are genuine investors who ordinarily would have contributed to the development of some of our communities or societies but they end up being scammed.“All these positive investments will go waste; such people will not come to the country to invest, they will also tell friends not to invest [in Ghana] and it makes nonsense of our travels here and there to woo investors into the country.”
