District Chief Executive for Amansie West in the Ashanti region, Charles Oti-Prempeh, has endorsed police calls for speed ramps on the main Kumasi - Obuasi road.
He says the Ghana Highway Authority must give the issue a serious thought to save lives especially on the Pakyi-Awhiankwanta stretch.
Mr. Oti-Prempeh was at the Komfo Anokye Hospital to see victims of today’s accident at Pakyi which left four people dead and many others injured.
Majority of victims in Tuesday’s accident onboard the 33-seater Mercedes Benz Bus with registration GT 4803 Q were from Manso Abuoso in the Amansie West District.
Relatives besieged the Accident and Emergency Center after a Kumasi based radio station announced 27 people had died in the accident. Hospital officials had a tough time managing the anxious relatives who wanted to get first hand information on the conditions of family members involved in the accident.
Mr Oti-Prempeh told Nhyira FM he had already sent a request to the Highway Authority but was yet to receive any response, saying the time to act is now.
Meanwhile, there is conflicting account on the casualty figure in today’s accident.
While police quote 36, hospital authorities put the number at 58.
Hospital sources say 37 injured victims are still on admission while 18 have been treated and discharged.
The dead have been identified as 20-year old Akua Twumasi and her three year old son, Nana Twumasi, as well as Kwaku Atta who is 30.
The fourth person, a middle-aged man, is yet to be identified.
