A Circuit court in Sunyani has sentenced Gamiyu Alhassan Adams, an 18 year old unemployed to three years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing cables belonging to Ghana Telecom valued at more than 312 million cedis at Penkwase in Sunyani.
Adams was sentenced on his own guilty plea to the charge of stealing.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Martin Defeamakpor told the court, presided over by Mr. Kofi Debrah that at about 0300 hours on January 12 this year, a witness in the case spotted the convict at the Civic Centre carrying a quantity of cables and heading towards the centre of the town.
He said the witness confronted Adams who sensing danger threw the cables on the ground and took to his heels.
ASP Defeamakpor said the witness raised an alarm and the convict was chased and arrested and sent to the police station together with the cables.
He said the Brong Ahafo regional manager of Ghana Telecom was invited to the police station where he identified the cables as property of the company.
The prosecutor said Adams led the police and some officials of the company to a cable chamber at Penkwase where he said he cut the cables.
ASP Defeamakpor stated that about 400 subscribers of Telecom had had their lines cut off as a result of the convict’s action.
