Police personnel have been deployed to Akpersukorpe in the Biakoye District of the Volta Region following chieftaincy clashes between two factions in the area which left one person dead.
The son of the chief, Nicholas Ani was shot and killed while the chief himself, Nana Okiti-Kpo III, sustained injuries from gunshots infront of his palace.
Residents of the area are said to be fleeing the community due to fears of reprisal attacks.
The DCE for the area, Louis Akata has blamed the violence on negligence by the police, but the Hohoe Divisional commander ACP Emmanuel Appiah told Joy News the DCE is not impartial in the matter.
He said he prevented the town folks from organizing the festival last year due such attacks in the past.
He indicated that he advised the people against organizing this year' festival this as well only for the DCE to lead the chief’s faction to his office to convince him to allow the festival to take place.
Meanwhile the paramount chief Nana Okiti-Kpo III has been narrating his ordeal to Joy News. Speaking to Joy News' Volta Regional correspondent Agbeko Ben Kofie, the chief said he went home to meet his elders on how to welcome the new year only for the assailants to burn his vehicle and kill his son.
He suspects the gunshot came from a neighbour’s house but he gave the assurance that he will want the law to take its course.
