Social workers at the Edwenase Vocational Rehabilitation Centre in Kumasi say they are living in constant fear of attacks by a section of the residents. A family claiming ownership of the parcel of land on which the Centre is sited, are demanding compensation from government for the property acquired decades ago. The centre was established by government in the 1960s to train people with disabilities. But residents in recent times have been unleashing their anger at managers and workers of the Centre, - both physically and mentally. The latest attack occurred at dawn on Thursday when some faceless people invaded the premises to vandalize an ICT centre under construction by the Ministry of Communication. They ripped off and set ablaze project materials deposited at site by the contractor. Centre Manager, Modesto Ayiwole, says persistent confrontation and resistance to administrative decisions have made running of the rehab centre extremely difficult. “Over the past six years that I have been here, they’ve been worrying me over the land. It puts us in constant fear because if they’re laying claim to the land, then we are also illegal occupants to this place and therefore we do not have the legitimacy to do anything," he stated. According to him, members of the family claiming ownership of the land have been casting insinuations, mistreating and openly insulting the workers whenever they come into direct contact. Mr. Ayiwole calls for immediate intervention of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to safeguard life and property. “The confrontations and attacks that we have had and reported, even up to the regional minister’s level, that is about four years back, no proper action has been taken to let the chief and his people know that this is government land. Or, in order words, no action has been taken to ensure that if they deserve any compensation, it has been paid to them so that they wash off their hands,” the Centre Manager said.
