The deputy head of the Commercial Crimes Unit of the Police CID, DSP Gifty Mawuenyega Tehoda, who has been at the centre of the recent cocaine-swap scandal has been released.
DSP Mawuenyegah Tehoda who has been detained at the Bureau of National Investigations since December 29, 2011 over her role in the matter was Thursday granted bail by the Human Rights Court in Accra to the tune of GH¢50,000.
Shortly after her release, DSP Mawuenyegah spoke to Joy News’ Sammy Darko about her condition and expressed delight about the development.
“I am very weak,” she remarked, confirming her hunger strike in her last days in the custody of the BNI: “Yes I was not eating actually.”
She indicated her willingness to cooperate with the BNI’s investigations, but will not speak further on the subject under investigations.
Mr Kwesi Tehoda, husband of the beleaguered top police officer, also told Joy News he feels “great and excited” about his wife’s release.
He was confident his “innocent wife” would be exonerated at the end of the investigations. “At the appropriate time the truth shall come out,” he maintained.
Although she said she needed “sometime to rest” having been confined for weeks, she was yet to seek clearance from the police authorities if she has to resume work on Monday.
Meanwhile, information available to Joy News indicates that the BNI is expected to press charges against DSP Mawuenyegah on Friday and plead for a remand to enable them question her further.
The BNI has intimated that DSP Mawuenyegah is a key suspect in unraveling the mystery behind the cocaine-turned-baking-soda incident.
