Some petty traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra are accusing the police of assault. The traders had threatened to demonstrate against some foreigners they say have taken over the retail businesses against the country’s laws. The police however secured a restraining order to stop the demonstration. The traders claim even though they complied with the court order, heavily armed police officers Wednesday morning stormed the Tip-Toe Lane area and allegedly assaulted some of them. One of the alleged victims, Moses Abor, who is also the assemblyman for the area, told Joy News’ Anny Osabutey that the leader of the police team ordered for his maltreatment. “I only asked the chairman what is the problem, quickly they (police) started attacking me, beating me, you can see my [torn] shirt. The commander used the shocker [taser] to shock me…they started hitting my face, my mouth, started pulling me like I am a thief.” The traders are calling on the government to enforce the laws of the country and restrain foreigners from the retail sector.
