Breast Care International and Peace and Love Hospital in Kumasi, both privately owned establishments that are leading breast cancer awareness creation and treatment crusade in the country are introducing the treatment of kidney diseases into their programmes. The new dimension is address the increasing kidney cases, notably acute renal failure and chronic kidney failure in the country. Chief Executive officer of Peace and Love clinic in Kumasi Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addae tells Luv News in connection with the expansion programme three new dialysis machines have been installed at the hospital to augment the two already in use. The hospital, she said, had also been equipped with modern equipment for managing hepatitis and HIV. According to Dr. Mrs. Wiafe Addae who is also the president of Breast Care International, renal or kidney failure, which is not infectious, can happen to anyone no matter the age but chronic kidney failure is a serious and long-term medical condition. Available information indicates 1,500 kidney transplant are currently performed in the United Kingdom every year. In the United States, 370,000 people are on dialysis with 15,000 likely to receive transplant this year while 88,000 are on waiting list to receive transplant with eight people dying every day waiting for organ transplant. In Ghana, only very few people are on dialysis or have received transplant due mainly to the high cost involved and lack of transplant facility in the country. The main treatment available locally is haemodialysis which involves attaching the patient to a dialysis machine for the artificial filtering of blood to remove waste products. Meanwhile the president of the Ghana Medical Association, Dr. Opoku Adusei has praised BCI and the Peace and Love hospital for their vital role in the development of the health sector, particularly with the introduction of dialysis center in the Ashanti region.
