Skin disease is said to be the third most reported disease at Ghana’s health institutions. This is partly due to the fact that a lot of people do not take good care of their skins.
To this end, dermatologists in the country have formed a union, the Ghana Society of Dermatology to provide specialised care for persons suffering from various skin diseases in order to minimize the trend.
The society has the task of creating awareness on the need for individuals to maintain a healthy skin as well as provide quality treatment for those who will need skin care. The Society will also carry out advocacy, education and training programs on skin care.
The Society’s aim is to bring together all dermatologists, pharmacists and other professionals in the country to promote quality skin care.
Speaking at the launch of the Society in Accra, the Head of the Fevers Unit of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Prof Margaret Lartey noted that skin disease was a very common disease in Ghana yet there were only few dermatologists available at the country’s health centres to treat persons suffering from skin diseases.
She thus called on government to assist in the training of more dermatologists for the various health centers.
She also called for a reduction in the practice of skin bleaching since according to her, it is the number one cause of most skin diseases.
A representative of the Deputy Health Minister, Mr. Boateng pledged the Ministry’s resolve to help the Society achieve its aim by providing equipment and introducing dermatological courses in all the regions.
