The Minority in Parliament has accused the NPP administration of betraying the youth after government allocated less than 30 percent of its budgetary request for 2018 to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Former Youth and Sports Minister and Member of Parliament for Wa Central Rashid Pelpuo says this shows the NPP government isn't committed to youth development.
“For a government that has campaigned on the back of youth development and giving them jobs and all, and to ironically allocate this small money to them is serious.
“It is the betrayal of the people, it is the betrayal of the youth and I hope they will understand that they are not being taken care of,” he told Joy News.
The Ministry asked for ¢102 million but was given ¢32 million, which represents a 35 percent decline in the budget given the Ministry last year.
The former Minister said half of the amount will be used for paying salaries of workers while 12 million will be used for goods, services and administration.
In essence, he said only “¢2.7 million will be used for real Youth and Sports activities which is next to nothing.”
But the Youth and Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, disagrees.
He says more than ¢75 million in additional support will be made available for youth development from the District Assembly Common Fund to make up for the cuts.
“There is a huge support coming from the NYA…so we are now happy for that,” he said.
