Two people from Texas have been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty in Florida federal court to illegal sales of endangered jaguar skins.
Prosecutors said Tuesday a federal judge in Miami imposed sentences of just over a year on Elias Garcia and Maria Angela Plancarte. Both are 53 and are from La Feria, Texas. They earlier pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge stemming from the jaguar skins sales.
Court records show the pair initially offered jaguar skins for sale in South Florida in 2008. They made repeated trips to Florida for later sales and also sold skins in Texas, each time for thousands of dollars.
Eventually they sold jaguar skins to undercover U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officers in 2010, which led to the charges against them.
