The Electoral Commission (EC) has asked the general public to attach importance to the forthcoming biometric registration exercise. The Commission hopes to use the final registration document as a guiding tool to plan future polls aside the pending December general elections. The Deputy Director of the Commission in the Central Region, Serebour Quaicue told JOYNEWS TV’s regional correspondent, Georgina Appiah the existing electoral laws prohibit people registering as voters in the name of another person whether dead or alive. He thus urged people not to give false information to registration officers in a bid to secure voters’ identification cards.Mr. Quaicue indicated applicants must be physically present at the registration centers to provide their personal information including their name, date of birth, sex, residential address, names of parents (dead or alive), home town and district among others. The Deputy Commissioner maintained that the registration would be done in clusters simultaneously in all regions across the country.
There are 23,000 registration centers where the 7000 biometric equipment will be put to use.The Central Region has 1,948 registration centers with 536 kits, meaning, every kit would be responding for four centers.
