The struggle over passengers between members of the Co-operative Transport Company and the Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) at the Nkawkaw Lorry Park has led to the arrest and prosecution of two porters and two drivers at a magistrate’s court at Nkawkaw presided over by William Boampong.
They were charged for rioting and causing harm.
Two porters and one driver whose plea was not taken were granted 25 million cedis bail each.
Those granted bail included Kwabena Boateng, 36, Kofi Yeboah, 22, and Charles Abrabo, 24.
Eugene Odartey Lamptey, a driver, was remanded for resisting arrest.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Victor Aleawonor told the court that at about 9:30 hours on January 16, while the two transport companies were loading their vehicles at the main Nkawkaw Lorry Park, Kofi Yeboah forcibly entered a vehicle being run by the PROTOA to drag a passenger to join a Co-operative vehicle. He said this brought about a misunderstanding between the two companies as the PROTOA porters resisted resulting in rioting. Three porters of the PROTOA were assaulted and the wind screen of one of their vehicle was broken. The Prosecutor said when police personnel went to the lorry park to effect arrests following a complaint, Lamptey prevented the policemen from undertaking their lawful duties and the police had to call for re-enforcement to make the arrest.Source: GNA
