The Progressive People's Party (PPP) wishes to congratulate the people of Senegal for restoring hope and confidence in democracy in their country. Congratulations go to incoming President Macky Sall for keeping his dreams alive and fighting off creeping dictatorship. It is refreshing to see the change from despair to hope in the faces of the Senegalese people.
It is unfortunate that President Abdoulaye Wade gave in to undemocratic wishes by taking the path used by such "Presidents for Life" as Robert Mugabe, to extend their rule by amending their countries' constitutions. Thankfully, in Ghana, we are called upon to "...resist oppressors rule". This is a duty we must all take seriously. The PPP will continue to speak out against dictatorial tendencies on the part of the current Mills Administration and future ones.
While celebrating the people of Senegal, we condemn in no uncertain terms the adventure-seeking and power-usurping soldiers who have seized control of government in Mali. Against the backdrop of elections to be held in months and a President who had decided not to seek re-election, this military coup must be reversed. The African Union and ECOWAS must work relentlessly to reverse this misguided adventure. Democracy must be restored in Mali.
Africa Awake!
