A five-year-old boy took 50 packets of heroin to his school and showed them to his classmates, police say.
He found the drugs in his stepfather's jacket, which he had taken to school in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Police told the Connecticut Post he took the heroin out for a show and tell session, but a school superintendent said he only waved it around in front of classmates.
The boy's stepfather has been arrested on drugs charges.
Bridgeport Superintendent Paul Vallas said that he thought the boy had taken his stepfather's jacket to school without realising what was inside it.
"Children bring to school what they find at home," he said.
State custody
A teacher from the school noticed the drugs, and the authorities were called.
The stepfather, 35-year-old Santos Roman, went to the school and retrieved his jacket, but the police had already removed the drugs, which had a street value of around $500 (£300).
Mr Roman returned to the school when he realised the heroin was missing. He was arrested on drug charges and risk of injury to a minor.
He was being held on $100,000 (£62,979) bail.
The boy was placed in state custody while other family members were being located, the Connecticut Post reported.
