The Greater Accra Regional branch of the ruling National Democratic Congress is demanding the immediate removal of the head of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU).
Mr. Kobina Ade Coker, Accra NDC Chairman is accusing ACP Angwubutuge Awuni of unprofessional conduct.
He told Joy News’ Evans Mensah the MTTU boss must be removed immediately from the Greater Accra Region.
“He can be moved anywhere but not in Greater Accra,” Ade Coker stated adding, “we in Greater Accra cannot work with a policeman like [Awuni]."
The MTTU boss was embroiled in a controversy with the former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashietey with the ex-minister alleging he was assaulted by policemen on the orders of ACP Angwubutuge Awuni.
The former Minister said he had gone to ensure that non-residents of Klottey Korle were not allowed to register in the ongoing biometric registration exercise when the MTTU boss, in whose jurisdiction the said registration was taking place, came and insulted him.
ACP Awuni had in an interview with Joy News admitted being angered to the extent that he lost his temper and subsequently apologised for the uncomplimentary words he threw at the former minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for the constituency.
The former minister, he said, had threatened to dismiss him from office. He had insisted he was well within his rights to stop the former minister from fomenting trouble during the registration process.
But his apology appears not to be enough for the Greater Accra Regional branch of the NDC.
Ade Coker said the policeman failed to respect the code of ethics of his profession and should be made to pay for it.
He said if it was in any jurisdiction, Awuni himself, having admitted publicly of insulting the former minister, would have resigned but if he has failed to do that then he should be removed.
Ade Coker said they will officially be presenting a petition to the Inspector General of Police to remove the MTTU boss, failing which they will picket at the offices of the MTTU in Accra until their appeal is respected.
But a lawyer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Kofi Abotsi has described the situation as worrisome, especially in an election year.
He stated that the problem has come up because the Inspector General of Police is largely seen as part of the executive structure because he is appointed by the president.
Mr Abotsi however cautioned that the incident between Awuni and the former Greater Accra Regional Minister should be considered as an isolated case and should not be generalized.
