A 70-year-old retired university lecturer, S.B Kangberee has successfully filed his nomination to contest the chairmanship position of the governing New Patriotic Party.
He was accompanied by cheerful supporters of the party who sang and danced to brass band music.
His nomination forms were received by a member of the Upper West Region’s election committee, Alhaji Abdul Haki Mohammed.
S.B Kangberee is one of the front-runners to win the race to succeed Alhaji Abdul Rahman Short who has now declared his intention to contest the national chairmanship position of the NPP after been regional chairman for 12 years.
The former Saudi Arabia university English lecturer turned politician, thanked the current regional executives of the party for moving the party from zero to 5 seats. He, however, believed that there is room for improvement.
‘‘I will like to bring a new vision to the party, the most important one being the decentralization of the party’s activities to the districts in the region. We need to carry the party to the people in the villages.
It is not good for us to sit in the office in Wa and called the people from the villages to come,’’ he stated.
Mr. Kangeree said he will bring transparency to his administration if he is given the nod.
He debunked suggestion that he is new in the party, adding, he is not only a supporter of the Danquah-Bussia-Dombo tradition but a bleeding heart defender of the record of the tradition.
He touted his contributions including financing the party’s activities in the region during the elections.
At least six other persons, including a businessman, Alhaji Azeez Abdul Rahman White, lotto agent, Zakaria Chige and Diana Puopelle filed to contest for the positions of first vice regional chairman, youth and women’s organizers respectively.
Campaign coordinator for Team Kangberee, Elvis Botaa Banoemuleng later in an interaction dismissed claims that President Akufo-Addo and other senior government functionaries of the NPP were supporting a rival candidate in the election.
Mr. Elvis Botaa warned members of the election committee that they will resist any attempt to disqualify any member of their team from contesting the impending NPP regional election as they are rumours to that effect.
