New Patriotic Party Presidential aspirant, Papa Owusu Ankomah has said he will make the fight against corruption a key component of his administration if he is made President of the nation.
The Member of Parliament for Sekondi who boasts of a nationwide support for his candidature admitted that his ruling NPP government could have done a lot more in the fight against corruption.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Papa Owusu Ankomah declared that the fight against corruption must begin with the government itself and as a first step, asset declaration must be mandatory for all government appointees.
The MP, who at different times occupied the Attorney General and Justice, Education, Youth and Sports as well as the Interior Ministry portfolios in President Kufuor’s government, explained why investigations into the murders of the former Northern Regional Chairman of the CPP, Issa Mobilla; the King of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani and the Taifa shooting incident have not be successfully dealt with.
He said in the case of Issa Mobilla, the case has been investigated and the docket was with the Attorney General, and with the Taifa Shooting incident, he was aware a compensation package had been proposed for the victims of the police shooting incident.
The officers involved, he said should not be shielded from prosecution if they were found to have acted against service instruction or there was evidence to suggest they were culpable in wrong doing.
Papa Owusu Ankomah, who left office as further admitted that the new educational reforms had flaws that could have been avoided if an intensive public consultation had been thoroughly conducted. He was however confident that he would win the flagbearership slot come December 2007 when the congress will be held.
