Kosmos Energy has handed over two rehabilitated health facilities at Axim and Ewoku in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region to Ghana Health Service.
The Chest Centre and the Community Health Centre had been closed for several years due to disrepair until November last year when Kosmos Energy committed to rehabilitate both.
They were commissioned on Tuesday by the Minister of Health, Mr Alban Bagbin and will now be reopened to the public.
The former Chest Centre building will now be used as the Accident and Emergency Centre for the Axim Hospital. A new walkway and paved driveway linking the Centre to the main hospital to ensure easy access for patients and ambulance vehicles have also been added.
Kosmos says it undertook the project to improve upon access to critical medical resources in an emergency. Until now, all accident and emergency cases had to be transferred to hospitals elsewhere. With the rehabilitation, the people of Ewoku and its environs will now also have access to primary health care.
The Corporate Affairs Director at Kosmos Energy Ghana, Mr. George Sarpong said “Kosmos Energy prides itself in being able to lend a hand in the communities where we operate and also live. We do them because it is the right thing to do.”
Vice President and Country Manager of Kosmos Energy Ghana, Mr. Mike Murphy, said, "The projects are a demonstration of our commitment to improving the communities and supporting government health care initiatives.”
He added that the company is working on several other projects in a comprehensive short and long-term corporate social responsibility plan.
On his part the Minister of Health, Alban Bagbin who commissioned the two facilities said: “The commissioning today, of these two projects is yet another commendable example of our ongoing commitment to support and to partner with corporate Ghanaian entities such as Kosmos Energy. And our presence here is to endorse the fact that when Kosmos makes a promise to the people they live with, they actually deliver that promise.”
Kosmos Energy is a leading independent oil and gas exploration and production company focused on frontier and emerging areas in Africa and South America.
The company’s asset portfolio includes existing production, major discoveries and exploration prospects offshore Ghana, as well as exploration licenses with significant hydrocarbon potential offshore Mauritania, Morocco and Suriname and onshore Cameroon.
