Trouble is said to be looming in the North Dayi Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), over an alleged plot and conspiracy between a section of the national executives of the party and the constituency executives to disqualify Mr. Ken Anku, one of the two parliamentary aspirants in the constituency. Speaking to The Independent on the alleged conspiracy, which is said to have been hatched by Mr. Andy Lartey, North Dayi Constituency Chairman of NPP, representatives of 64 angry polling station chairmen told the media on Monday that they would storm the party headquarters in Accra to present a petition to the national executive as a sign of their utter displeasure at the manipulation of party affairs in the constituency. According to the polling station chairmen, they are privy to the clandestine plot, which include attempts to impose the other parliamentary-candidate aspirant in the constituency, Ms Esther Ofori, on the party there. The spokesman for the 64 polling station chairmen and polling station chairman for Wusuta, Mr. E. M. Danso, threatened that there will be mayhem in North Dayi NPP, if Ms. Esther Ofori is imposed on them as the party's parliamentary candidate for the 2008 elections. They said, they would render the constituency party ungovernable should the national executive and constituency executives conspire to impose any candidate on them. The polling station chairmen said, they would support any move to hold a primary to enable them elect freely a candidate of their own choice and promised to rally round to support the winner. Mr. Andy Lartey, North Dayi NPP chairman when contacted by newsmen, enumerated conditions under which anyone could vie on the NPP ticket as the party’s parliamentary candidate. Based on that he told the newsmen, he had made his recommendations on Mr. Ken Anku's candidature to the national executive of the party, and he (Mr. Anku) has subsequently been invited to the national headquarters today for consultation. Mr. Lartey said he was not in the position to tell the media what the recommendations were. In their petition signed by 64 polling station chairmen, they said, “We the undersigned hereby write to petition against any decision of imposing a Parliamentary Aspirant on the constituency without organising any election at the primary.” The petition said the imposition of a particular candidate on the constituency could be viewed as undemocratic and noted that, the choice of a parliamentary candidate for a particular constituency must be through the ballot box. They noted that the NPP as a party would suffer disintegration should there be any form of imposition of any sort, and added, "As much as we believe it is the wish of both the National Executive and all other party faithful here in the constituency to win the seat during the 2008 general election or improve significantly on our previous performance, care must be taken in taking any dangerous decision of imposing a candidate on the constituency.” Not only is the imposition of a parliamentary candidate on party members of the constituency undemocratic, but could also lead to anarchy or chaos within the constituency, the petition stated, adding, one must not forget that both aspirants come from the same locality and have their followers.
