The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr Omane Boamah has revealed that government is taking a keen interest in the development of sports and is committed to improving infrastructure all over the nation to get Ghana to a certain appreciable grade.
He made this revelation in an exclusive interview to Joy Sports at the conclusion of the Ghana International Grand Prix event at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
According to him, government is liaising with the private sector to ensure that facilities are upgraded all over the nation as Sports has the potential to improve health standards and also bring glory to the nation.
He added that government alone cannot bear the cost of providing sports facilities hence the need to liaise with the private sector to help in that regard.
“We are trying our bit as a government to provide adequate infrastructural facilities and also put up new ones for several sports. This comes at huge costs. That is why we are grateful to the likes of RLG who have consistently shown a desire to support the efforts of government in developing the youth through sports.
“It may not be enough but we are getting there. You need to have visited some of the facilities we used during the ECOWAS Games and the deplorable state in which some of them were. I am glad to say that these facilities have been thoroughly upgraded and we look forward to doing a lot more in the near future.”
He further added that the tartan tracks in Kumasi which though staged the Meet still needed some upgrade and committed himself and government into replacing them.
He was happy to also announce that government had released all the funds needed by the Ghana Olympic Committee to compete favorably with athletes from several nations in the upcoming Olympic Games which is scheduled for London in just under three weeks time.
