Goalkeeping is football’s most quintessential position, as such goalkeepers are always on the borderline of the making the next match-winning save or committing the most costly howler. It is strange how a moment of sheer brilliance or folly from the goalkeeper can determine the fate of a football match.

In view of this, the 2017/18 Ghana Premier League has witnessed a few keepers meteorically rising into the realm of recognition and proving their worth for their clubs, with just twelve games into the season.

10.  John Moosie (Eleven Wonders)

You can choose to watch the stats or watch 24-year-old John Moosie in action. His team has the second worst defense in the league, conceding 14 goals in 12 games, however, the former Berekum Chelsea shot-stopper has impressed in goal for the newcomers and has been the brightest spot in the team, albeit keeping just 2 clean sheets so far.

9.      Eric Ofori Antwi (Medeama SC)

Eric Ofori Antwi has made 8 appearances and kept 3 clean sheets. Alawa has withstood competition from Yaw Ansah Fufuro to cling on as the first choice goalkeeper for the Mauves. The 23-year-old national team goalkeeper has put in strings of strong performances to prove his best years still lie ahead.

8.      Richmond Ayi (WAFA SC)

Following his remarkable debut campaign with Techiman City, the 20-year-old Richmond Ayi hasn’t looked back and his stock has since been on the rise until his recent send-off against All Stars. He’s facing a difficult period with WAFA at the moment, as the entire team is enduring a topsy-turvy campaign. Ayi has slotted in quite seamlessly for Razak Abalora, recording 2 clean sheets in 12 games and conceding 14 goals.

7.      Prince Asempa (Bechem United)

The only teenager in the list. Prince Asempa has evolved so much over the past two seasons. He is Ghana’s version of Donnaruma – not in stature, but experience. Asempa rose to stardom at age 16 when he crowned a fine debut season with the FA Cup medal. He has featured in the CAF Confederation Cup. Now at 18, Asempa has usurped Ernest Adu as the club’s no.1 having kept 2 clean sheets in 9 matches.

6.      Richard Attah (Elmina Sharks)

Richard Attah is enjoying a breakthrough season having joined from Okyeman Planners last season. Attah who has benefited from Joseph Essam’s unfortunate injury in their league opener against Dreams FC has established himself as the club’s safest pair of hands. At 23 years, Attah has kept an impressive 5 clean sheets from 8 appearances and is having a stellar season.

5.      Joseph Addo (Aduana Stars)

He’s still one of the best in the country. The national team goalkeeper has seen a massive improvement since joining Aduana Stars. He has not made the biggest case for himself this season as his club’s full focus is tilted towards impressing in Africa. That notwithstanding, Addo, 27, has made 6 appearances and kept 2 clean sheets while conceding just 6 goals.

4.      George Owu (AshGold)

The 35-year-old has rolled back his glory days. Owu, has kept a joint high 6 clean sheets out of 11 appearances. Kigali, as he’s popularly known, has been the backbone for the resilient AshGold backline who boast the meanest defence in the land with only 6 goals conceded. Owu, just like wine gets, has gotten better with age.

3.      Isaac Amoako (Dreams FC)

Amoako is another proof age is just a number. The Dreams goalkeeper at 34, is still going tough and hard. Aside his howler against Medeama recently and the heavy defeat from WAFA, Amoako’s performances have been top quality. Incredibly reliable in goal, he has racked up 6 clean sheets in 11 appearances.

2.      Isaac Hagan (Karela United)

Prior to his injury against Hearts of Oak some weeks ago, Isaac Hagan had impressed as arguably the best goalie in the land. Hagan, 25, had his best game when Karela traveled to defeat Wa All Stars, where he was stupendously outstanding. He kept 4 clean sheets from 7 games before suffering the horrific injury. He has set the tone for Karela’s watertight defense.

1.      Felix Annan (Asante Kotoko)

Perfecting the art of goalkeeping, Annan is by and large the best goalkeeper in the country. He has received three man-of-the-match awards, more than any goalkeeper. Amid his high standards, he has kept just 4 clean sheets in 12 games, owing to the club’s porous defense. His reflexes and quick feet off the line has been a sight that gives the Porcupines something to cheer about. At 23, the goalkeeper is enjoying his best season yet and has improved on his amazing but occasionally error-stricken campaign last season. He has conceded 11 goals so far.
