The offices of the Northern Region branch of the Ghana Highway Authority have shut down following threats of attacks by vigilante groups affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party.
The workers say they are no longer safe working in the office.
Joy News’ Northern Region correspondent Hashmin Mohammed who visited the offices of the Regional Office reported a giant notice with the inscription “Office closed. All Highway operations ceased from this day 21st May 2018 until further notice!!! Workers [are] under further continuous threat.”
A statement issued and jointly signed by Oswald Amanfu and Union Chairman Noble Yasroku said the shutdown has become necessary due to constant attacks or threat of attacks by persons affiliated to the governing NPP.
The staff members have been subject of attacks by the vigilante group -Kandahar Boys- who accuse the Regional Highway Authority boss of giving away contracts to persons affiliated to the opposition National Democratic Congress.
Last week some members of the vigilante group besieged the offices of the regional High Authority and vandalized property.
The Kandahar boys who were said to be on motorbikes ransacked the office after they were told the Regional Highway head was not around.
They promised to return if the Daboya road contract awarded to the NDC man is not terminated.
No arrests have been made by the police even though the threats and the attacks have been reported several times.
Workers say they are no longer safe in the offices.
“We wish to further inform the Northern Regional Security Council to investigate, arrest and prosecute the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent to others . This is the only way the safety of our staff can be guaranteed.
“We want to indicate that if this issue is not resolved within a reasonable time, the entire staff of the Ghana Highway Authority we will be compelled to embark on an industrial action,” the Ghana Highway Authority threatened.
