Uganda Hippos took early advantage as they dismissed Ghana's Black Satellites 3-1 in the first leg of the 2013 Africa Youth Championships qualifier at Nakivubo on Saturday.
A Julius Ogwang brace and another goal from Joseph Mpande leaves the Hippos needing at least a one-goal loss in the return leg next month to progress to the final qualification round.
Michael Anaba got Ghana's consolation in this under 20 encounter.
The Satellites created an early scare when Anaba capitalised on Yusuf Mukisa's error just four minutes into the game to hand the visitors the lead.
But the home side hit back moments later through striker Ogwang following a goalkeeping howler from Muntari Tagoe.
Coach Paul Nkanta's boys then went ahead for the first time with Mpande scoring the second seven minutes from half time.
Ogwang ensured the Hippos went into recess with a 3-1 lead on 44 minutes, brilliantly burying Gift Ali's beautiful pass.
The visitors tried to conjure up a comeback in the second period in vain as the Hippos held on to take a healthy advantage to Accra.
The second leg is slated for August 8- 10. The winners over the two legs face either Morocco or Gambia for the ticket the event in Algeria next year.
