A deputy communications director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has questioned the rationale behind President Mahama’s nationwide “Thank You” tour, following the final funeral rites of the late President Mills.Sammy Awuku posited that President Mahama's supposed 10-day nationwide “Thank You” tour is a disguised political campaign the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has begun in earnest. The Deputy Communications director made these assertions when he appeared on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Tuesday.President Mahama, according to Sammy Awuku, just like Chairman for the Funeral Planning Committee Kofi Totobi Quakye did, President Mahama had already expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their support during the late President Mills’ funeral, in his Presidential broadcast.Mr. Awuku argued that if all the key personalities (example Naadu Mills, Totobi Quakye, Prez. Mahama, J.H Martey Newmann) in the organization of Mills’ funeral have all in their varied ways expressed their gratitude to Ghanaians, why should Prez Mahama spend the country’s meager resources in the name of a “Thank you” tour.According to Mr. Awuku, inasmuch as the death of President Mills was a great loss, it did not mean the governance machinery must come to a halt. He said President Mahama’s “Thank you” tour is not a priority for Ghana hence the President could put the 10-day tour to a better use.But Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr said President Mahama’s “Thank you” tour is in line with customary practices where the bereaved families go round to express gratitude to all who sympathized with them during their bereavement.Kwesi Pratt also dismissed accusations that President Mahama’s tour was a nationwide campaign tour for the December polls. According to him, the speeches Mahama had made on the tour has no political undertone, hence could not be likened to a political campaign tour.President John Mahama was given a rousing welcome at the Central Region last week where he begun the "thank you" tour.In a mini durbar with the Zongo community at Kasoa, the President thanked all political parties for suspending their political activities and playing a key role in the funeral and burial of the late President John Mills.
