Ghanaian cardinal at the Vatican, Peter Appiah-Turkson has chastised the two major political parties, the ruling NDC and the opposition NPP of hypocrisy in their pursuit of power. Speaking at the 2011 Ghana Journalists Association awards ceremony over the weekend, Cardinal Appiah-Turkson also observed the only way the numerous calls for peace especially during elections can be realized is a national attitude that truly reflects the desire. “We living here in Ghana saw and knew the moment when the registration of diaspora voters was first mooted in the parliament of the NDC. NPP opposed it only to get to power and moot the same idea, and this time NDC which had mooted it first opposed it,” Cardinal Turkson recalled. He expressed worry over the winner- take-all- system of politics practiced in Ghana, which he described as unfortunate. He said the system only worked when the parties are in power. “When we are in power, winner-takes-it-all works, when they are out of power they realize that it throws them in very abject poverty and difficult situations,” he said. He cautioned, campaigning for peace will continue to be acrimonious if elections are seen to be a way of safe-guarding personal livelihood.
