Workers of Merchant Bank have made the bank’s customers bite their nails and wear frustrated looks as they have embarked on a nationwide strike. The strike action follows the National Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance Workers call for the removal of the Board of Directors and the Management of the Merchant Bank Ghana and the reinstatement of Reverend Smart Jonas Koranteng; Chairman of the Professional and Managerial Staff Union (PMSU) as ruled by the National Labour Commission. Today workers wore red armbands in protest. Customers who thronged the bank today told Joy News they are in the dark and could not understand why they could not access their accounts. They were particularly worried there was no official communication as to whether the bank was on strike. General Secretary of UNICOFF, Francis Davor told Joy News’ George Wiafe the strike action will go on unabated because management of the bank has refused to come to the discussion table. Management is however tight-lipped on the matter but in a press release, stated the issue leading to the termination of the former chairman was an internal disciplinary matter and expressed surprise at UNICOF seeking to promote an industrial relations environment which can make institutions ungovernable.
