The Export Development and Agriculture Investment Fund (EDIF) has indicated its preparedness to review its funding policy to export companies to encourage higher participation at international trade fairs. That, according to the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr Abdul Nashiru Issahaku, was to ensure participating companies at future international trade shows have the needed capacity to become more competitive on the international market. The CEO has subsequently directed the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) to strengthen its criteria for selecting export firms so that they could benefit from special sponsorship packages being put in place by EDIF to scale up the market activities of the firms. He has also tasked the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), the Association of Ghana Industry (AGI) and all stakeholders working in the area of export trade to coordinate their activities through the GEPA, in order to harmonise the operations of export firms. Dr Nashiru, speaking to the Daily Graphic in an interview on the sidelines of the just ended Izmir International Trade Fair (IZFAS) in Turkey, said that strengthening the resource capacity of some export companies would boost investor confidence in Ghana, since most foreign investor communities would use the success of local companies and industries engaged in foreign trade as a yardstick in selecting Ghana as a preferred business destination. He said the non-coordination between stakeholder companies and other state agencies working in the area of trade export and investment promotion remained a key challenge to EDIF’s funding strategy. “Although most stakeholders profess to be working to promote Ghana’s export, non coordination had seen little progress and inroads into the international market”, Dr Nashiru lamented, adding that It is for this reason that EDIF as the funding agency for Ghana’s export would want such activities to be synchronised to reflect the new vision to adequately market Ghana’s potential to the outside world. He further indicated that since Turkey’s World Expo 2020 is looking for a major partnership with Africa, Ghana’s current position as a major player in the African economy ought to be solidified. “The world export will see a lot of countries participating for which reason Africa must fully take advantage of,” Dr Nashiru said and added that, "it is not too early for Ghana to put n place a committee to start strategizing its participation.” Dr Nashiru further announced EDIF’s decision to engaged in aggressive marketing strategies in the coming years to ensure its mission is to enhance the economic growth of Ghana by the provision of funds on concessionary terms for the development and promotion of the country’s exports were achieved.
