A Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DVVSU) has been established at the Tarkwa Police Station to cater for domestic violence cases within Tarkwa Police Divisional Area.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Charles Domanban, Tarkwa Divisional Police Crime Officer says with the high rate of domestic violence in the Western Region, the Sekondi unit could not handle them therefore there was the need to establish a new unit to enhance their operations.
He told the Ghana News Agency said among the issues to be sent to the unit for action included sexual harassment, assault, rape, defilement and parental neglect because in the traditional system, most domestic issues were trivialized and reported to the police when the un-expected such as damage or death occurred.
DSP Domanban said it was better to prevent crime than punish criminals because no punishment could replace the damage caused or death.
