The Graduate Business Support Scheme (GEBSS), a public/private sector initiative between GEBSS Limited and the Ministry of Employment and Social welfare had registered 2,500 unemployed graduates in the 10 regions. Out of the number, 200 had submitted business plans of which 76 had been updated for possible funding by financial institutions. Mr Moses, Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, who announced this at the meet-the-press series in Accra on Tuesday, said the scheme, currently at implementation stage, aimed at equipping 10,000 unemployed graduates each year with requisite competencies to enhance their potential for self-employment, entrepreneurship and employability. He said GEBSS was completing arrangements with the Export Development and Agriculture Investment Fund to access a grant of GHȼ 400,000 towards premium payments to the Graduate Credit Insurance Guarantee Plan. "With the payment of this premium, 2000 unemployed graduates will be able to access a total of 20 million credit without collateral from financial Institutions to start their own businesses,” he said. On labour Administration, the minister said the ministry plays a key role in ensuring industrial peace, the protection of the rights of workers and effective and efficient public sector wage management. Mr Asaga said during the year under review, the Public Employment Centres of the Labour Department had placed 4,481 persons in gainful employment, a workman’s compensation of GHȼ 956,362 Ghana was paid to 121 Public sector workers and the dependants of deceased workers representing approximately 95 per cent of the cases under consideration. He said 273 cases of workmen’s compensation from the private sector were finalised and an amount of GHȼ915,177 was paid to injured workers and dependants of deceased workers. “Sixty one complaints were lodged with the Labour Department by the close of June, 2012. Out of these 55 cases were settled and six were withdrawn by the complainants. The department also issued 23 Collective bargaining Certificates to promote harmonious labour relationship.” On social protection, the Minister said the government’s commitment to social democratic principles was demonstrated by the promotion of inclusive development in which the poor has a voice. He said one of those strategies was to promote the empowerment of the poor through the implementation of a range of social protection interventions. Mr Asaga said 392 day care attendants were trained during the year under review; 187 new day care centres were registered and 124 existing day care centres were inspected and supervised regularly to ensure compliance with laid down rules and regulations. He said the Social Welfare Department also reconciled 232 dysfunctional families; enrolled 600 street children in schools; provided 1,300 delinquent children with social welfare services such as remand homes and probation services; provided 23,000 vulnerable and excluded children with psycho-social services within correctional centres, out of these 1,300 were re-integrated with their families.
