The Bank of Ghana is getting tough on institutions and businesses that quote prices of goods and services in dollars without the requisite authorization.
In a notice, the central bank reminded the public that under the current foreign exchange laws, the Ghana cedi is the only legal tender in the country.
The statement said “no resident of Ghana other than those licensed by the Bank of Ghana shall price, advertise, receive or make payments in any other foreign currency.“These include currency for goods and service such as school fees, sale and rental of vehicles, real estates, airline tickets and domestic contracts.”The statement further cautioned persons involved on the practice to desist since it constitutes a violation of the foreign exchange act.Persons found to be engaging in these act, according to the statement, could be fined not more than GHS 8,400.
