Speculations that the Rawlingses are behind the formation of the National Democratic Party came to rest when Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings was acclaimed the party’s flag-bearer for the December polls. However, the involvement of the former president is still unclear.
Monday, the NDP dropped the bomb on Joy News’ current affairs program pm:EXPRESS. The party’s Deputy Communications Director Dr. Hilarious Abiwu said the party is making overtures to confer the title of founder on the former president.
Dr. Abiwu explained Rawlings’ show of support for Nana Konadu’s candidature goes beyond merely husband –wife relationship. It is a relationship that is steeped in probity, accountability and social justice – same ideals that the NDC was founded on.
He revealed that the NDP will have no difficulty to confer the title of founder on Rawlings because it takes inspiration from the former president.
The party led by the former First Lady, according to Dr. Abiwu, is founded on the same ideology as the NDC. “It does not lie in the ambit of the president to say he accepts to be our founder or not. We are conferring the title on him”, the Deputy Communications Director hinted.
Though the NDP does not anticipate the former president to resign from the NDC, they still want to go ahead and confer that honorary title on him. Drawing on the case of the Nkrumaist front, Dr. Abiwu said the PNC drawing inspiration from Dr. Kwame Nkrumah does not make Nkrumah a non- CPP member.
It remains to be seen whether the former president would accept this honorary title though Kofi Adam, his aide said he was not aware of any such overtures from the NDP. He hinted though that the former president based on his belief in democracy would accept that honorary title.
