People of the Volta region have over the years been loyalists of ex-President Rawlings and the National Democratic Congress, NDC. In some constituencies in this region the ruling party is able to poll almost 95% of both presidential and parliamentary votes cast. So why has the Volta Region remained loyal to the NDC and what do residents make of the relationship between ex-president Rawlings and the NDC? Walking through the streets of Keta and Ketu South constituencies, you might wonder if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is the only political party contesting the parliamentary and presidential election there. In the Anlo constituency however, posters and sign boards of the NPP and PPP candidates could be seen; although not much. This constituency during the last election gave the NDC candidate, Clement Kofi Humado, about 97% of the total votes cast. In my quest to find out why most people from the Volta region are loyal to the NDC, I found out that, the history dated back to the days of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka who died on 17th April; 1967. Incumbent MP for the Anlo,Clement Kofi Humado, narrates that following what he says were rejection of Kotoka after the role he played in the over-throw of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Rawlings came along to redeem the image of "Voltarians". “When Kotoka at the insistence of the Akans particularly Afrifa, Kotoka was then in charge of the Army in Kumasi – so he was influenced to overthrow Kwame Nkrumah. But after the overthrow, they turned round and got him out. Not only out but out and out”, he said. This, according to Honorable Humado, didn't exactly go down well with people of the region. "People have not been happy about the incident. Then our own man came on the scene – Jerry John Rawlings … we supported him and during his reign there were some major infrastructural (and) developmental projects”. Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka was a member of the ruling National Liberation Council (NLC), which came to power in a military coup d'état on February 24, 1966, which overthrew the government of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He was shot dead after heavy fighting during an abortive coup attempt in April 17, 1967 involving junior officers of the reconnaissance regiment based at Ho. Accra’s International Airport was re-named Kotoka International Airport in his honour. You will not be wrong to say ex president Rawlings has over the years been idolized by the people of the Volta region. With the exit of his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings from the NDC and the open support she has received from Mr. Rawlings, I asked some chiefs what they think of Rawlings now that his heart is divided between NDC and NDP. I gathered, even if the party and its founder are on separate sides of the political divide; or better put, no matter what happens, most people from the Volta Region will remain loyal to the NDC and also to Ex president Rawlings. “We still recognize all that he has done for the region and the nation as a whole. Even though he is no more in the party, we know he is important … so anywhere he comes we will cheer him up”, said, the Paramount Chief of Weta . Regent to the paramount Chief of also noted “ about development , so far it is okay … we are still with them. Development comes in bits or probably if they are returned to power they would do something better than what they have done”. From the look of things, majority of people from the Volta region will never change their choice of political party NDC and political idol Jerry John Rawlings.
