The Member of Parliament-elect for the Yilo Krobo Constituency, Mr. Magnus Kofi Amoatey, is demanding an apology from the opposition NPP for claiming that the Presidential election results for the constituency were bloated by over 7,000 votes. He said the claims were baseless and unfounded and intended to create violence in the country. He was speaking in interview with Joy News in the Eastern Regional capital Koforidua.Magnus Kofi Amoatey referred to a publication in the Daily Graphic of 11th December which says the NPP realized that votes obtained in the Yilo krobo Constituency were inflated by up to 7,000, in favor of President John Mahama. This claim according to Magnus Amoatey is false.Magnus Kofi Amoatey said the Electoral Commission collated results from all the 124 polling stations, and declared that President John Mahama obtained 29,300 votes, as against Nana Akufo-Addo’s, 13,330 votes. This result, he said was duly signed by the NPP agents at the collation center and later made public in the media.“We are not aware where NPP got their results from, thereby saying that Nana Akufo-Addo was cheated by over seven thousand votes. This is what we are asking the NPP to produce the raw data that gave them the figure that they are declaring,” he stated. He added “the NDC did not declare the results; the results were declared by the EC and that was the results we know and that was what was carried in the media. So we think that NPP has made allegations which are unfounded and baseless and they owe Yilo Krobo an apology”.Magnus Kofi Amoatey said the NDC truly worked hard in its ‘Operation extend the margin between NDC and NPP’.In the 2008 elections, the difference between the two parties was 7,000 votes in favour of the NDC but this was extended to 15,000 in the December polls.Magnus Kofi Amoatey said the NPP “claim to be champions of democracy and when you are beaten at an election you must be humble enough to admit the election results, rather than resorting to this kind of violence and all kinds of accusations which are unfounded anyway”.
