The Joy Invitational Tournament season III was fun for the most part, not really because Multimedia won but the seriousness attached to every game by all teams.
I cannot believe, for the life of me, why the loudest mouths on radio were able to go home with a bag full of nothing. Yeah I mean nothing. Zenith Bank, Amal Bank, Promasidor and Nestle won the war of words on radio but performed abysmally in all games.
So what exactly was the downside to the tournament? Maybe, the teams should be given specific colours to don as the red jerseys were too ubiquitous.
Team Multimedia, and Nestle were all in red. It is understandable because Ghanaians are obsessed with English football and the myth surrounding the colour red (Liverpool, Manchester United and to some extent, Arsenal). It somewhat reflected on the direction of the tourney, anyway.
The Zenith Swagger
The beauty of sports is deepened when the loudest mouths are brought to their knees to eat humble pie. You should see the flamboyant signature entry of the lads and ladies from Zenith! The black suit and red tie swagger.
If matches were won with ‘Dadaba Suits’ and ‘fine ladies’, the cup would have gone to the bank which wants its customers to ‘Live The Zenith Life’. But the game was actually for men and women with guts made of steel and innate ‘MULTIplicity of JOY’.
After the preliminary stages and all the clamour from competing teams, some had to go home. You can give a bad student hundred opportunities and they will fail hundred times. Some teams got beaten twice at the preliminary stages and even when they were given a life line to redeem their image they got trounced again.
Team Multimedia’s Penalty Saga
Team Multimedia won the tournament for the first time since its inception after playing and winning all five games. Winning all games in a tournament is no news!
What makes the victory funny, and not necessary sweet, is the manner it came. Five matches, no goal, not even a Gyan-goal. Multimedia won all five matches by penalties. Yes, there were strikers, or is it attackers, who spent time chasing after their shadows.
The thing is, I do not really believe Coach Klutse is to blame for our terrible strikers. In fact there was a lady from the Lapaz Community Hospital, who was so incensed with the lackadaisical approach by Team Multimedia’s strikers, she screamed her throat hoarse.
I could hear her asking for some water to clear her throat after the team scaled through by the skin of their teeth. One of those self-appointed coaches of Multimedia who combed the flanks of the pitch got so frustrated, he demanded answers (from no one in particular) as to why the team had a striker who was being weighed down because of a huge load behind. I laughed till I could feel my feet weaken and the fury of the sun frying my forehead.
Winning a tourney without scoring a goal is not good enough. I know! I will be sliced open by the sports guys but if I do not talk about it, there is every possibility they will do the same thing in season IV.
