Ex-Ghana international, Abdul Razak, popularly known as the Golden Boy, has spoken about the importance of developing the juvenile game to improve the talent pool in the country.
The 55-year-old, whose dazzling performance in midfield inspired the Black Stars to win the 1978 Nations Cup, has mainly worked as a coach since retirement and also led his former club Asante Kotoko to win the Premier League title in 2003.
Speaking to Joy Sports' Dennis Mirpuri, Abdul Razak said, “When I was playing colts’ football, star players like Osei Kofi, Wilberforce Mfum left Kotoko camp to come and watch us (the colts’ team) play in the morning."
He added that, "When we got to the stadium, we played the curtain raiser before the reserve team comes before the regular team. That’s where I got my chance and whenever I play the people hailed me, so colts’ football shouldn’t be abandoned. It should be revived very well.”
The 1978 African player of the year was discovered while playing colts’ football for Kumasi based Smart Shadows FC and State Envoys FC in the late 1960’s.
