Convicted Member of Parliament for Bawku Central Adamu Dramani is expected to appeal a two year jail sentence slapped on him by a Fast Track High Court in Accra.
This was confirmed by the Minority Leader of Parliament Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu in an interview with Joy News.
The MP was found guilty on false declaration of office, perjury and deceiving a public officer and was whisked away to begin his sentence shortly after the verdict, Friday.
Adamu Dramani was deemed by the court to have a valid British Nationality, before contesting and winning the Bawku Central seat in 2008.
But the country’s constitution debars one from holding public office if he has a dual citizenship.
His lawyer, Yonny Kulendi told Joy News the judge was not lenient with his client, even though he respects the decision by the court.
He wondered how Dramani would be handed a two year sentence on charges of misdemeanor and implored all Ghanaians to read the verdict of the judge and draw their own conclusions.
Asked if he will appeal the case, Kulendi said that will be the decision of his client who was yet to communicate the way forward to him.
Few hours later, the Minority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu told Joy News he has picked up information that Adamu Dramani has instructed his lawyers to appeal the case.
His lawyers will also be asking for bail and a stay of execution, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu added.
He said if the MP is successful, the conviction would be nullified.
Asked what will happen to the Bawku Central seat, the Minority Leader said unless the court processes have been concluded Dramani still remains the MP.
