The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has threatened to sue government over the process of confirming the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive. The pressure group says the president had adopted unorthodox means to ensure Dr. Alfred Vanderpuye is approved.Members of the AMA are voting today, May 7, 2009 to either confirm or reject the nominee. Before the process even got underway, AFAG indicated it was heading for the courts to challenge the confirmation process. The group says president Mills breached the Constitution by appointing more than 30 per cent of the members of the assembly to facilitate the confirmation of Dr. Vanderpuye.“We are reliably informed the government as of now has appointed about 30 people meaning eight more extra, that is over stretching their powers, that is an illegality,” the group’s spokesperson told Joy News.Mr. Samuel Awuku said while Act 462 of the Constitution mandates the president to appoint 30 per cent of the assembly members, that provision had been violated. He said the government has 30 appointees in the 72-member assembly.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com
