The Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Afari Gyan and Dormaaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II have stated their support for ‘The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021.’
According to the two prominent Ghanaians, they are against same-sex marriage, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) activities.
Mr Afari Gyan indicated in a press statement on Saturday that he does not think same-sex marriage can be justified on grounds of human rights.
"I am aware that some of the factors we consider to be human rights today, such as the right to education, good drinking water and shelter, and the rights of women, workers, and children, were not considered to be so in times past.
"However, if we look critically at the factors that have become part of the body of human rights, it is clear that their essence is the improvement of the human condition and the protection and perpetuation of the human race.
"So to say that something is a human right is to say that it is good for every human being to have it because it improves the quality and dignity of the human species," the former EC boss noted
The Dormaahene also stated that “I am a judge, but if there is something that will destroy our culture and society, I’ll not support it; and I don’t think as a country we should tolerate it.”
He therefore called on Ghanaians to support the anti-LGBT bill. This he said is because the bill is one of the best things to happen to Ghana.
Background
The anti-LGBT bill was presented to Speaker Alban Bagbin on June 29, 2021.
The proponents want the promotion, advocacy, funding, and acts of homosexuality to be criminalized in the country.
The bill is currently being handled by the Committee on Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs.
The Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament has so far received over 124 memoranda from the public over the anti-LGBTQI+ Bill, which is currently before the House for consideration.
