Scores of youth in the border town of Aflao in the Volta Region, backed by traditional authorities, Friday staged a massive demonstration to demand the creation of a district for the area. Though the protest was nearly marred by a confrontation between demonstrators and security personnel, organisers told Joy News they succeeded in sending a clear message to government that they will not relent in their fight to secure a separate district for Ketu South with Denu as its capital, and Aflao as a separate municipality in fulfillment of government’s promise. At least, three people were arrested for violating the Public Order Act as the demonstration turned chaotic. Ivy Setordzi, a reporter with Victory FM, told Joy FM’s Evans Mensah on Top Story that the demonstration which started peacefully from Ghana’s border with Togo turned chaotic when the people got to the Denu junction. She said one of the demonstrators was arrested and beaten “seriously” when he poured water on a police officer. This disrupted the protest and the police had to fire tear gas to control the massing crowd. The protesters, however, proceeded to the Victoria Park where they all converged, but the District Chief Executive for Ketu South Bernard Frank Amable who was supposed to receive their petition was indisposed and could not show up. Nevertheless, the President of the Aflao Youth Association, Christian Yevunye said they managed to deliver the petition to the DCE. He said Aflao deserves a municipality because it meets all the requirements, and anything short of that, “we have no option than to stop voting”. He denied that a demonstrator poured water on a police officer. Rather, he said the police attempted to arrest a security man who was dumb, which the youth resisted. Meanwhile, Christian Yevunye said those who were arrested during the demonstration have been released.
