Attorney General and Minister of Justice Betty Mould Iddrisu has debunked allegation that she is reluctant to prosecute former government appointees because she has many friends within the opposition NPP.
Pressure has been mounting on the Attorney General to haul corrupt former government officials before court with the latest being the resigned Supreme Court Judge, Justice Kpegah who minced no words at all in charging the AG to prosecute ex-government officials.
According to Justice Kpegah audit reports and the Ghana@50 commission report are pregnant with palpable evidence of corruption which should serve as enough basis for prosecution.
Leading members of the party as well as sympathisers have shared similar opinions, and have called for her removal for failing to prosecute.
Mouthpieces of government have challenged the willingness of the AG to prosecute, accusing her of having too many friends within the opposition party.
But in a sharp rebuttal, Betty Mould Iddrisu said such accusations are not only false but painful.
According to her, the 2008 New Patriotic Party flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo and former Attorney General hounded her out of office in 2001 when she was working as a state attorney.
On a Radio Gold discussion programme 60 minutes, Betty Iddrisu alleged that Nana Akufo-Addo muscled her out of office on the grounds that she was “too prominent a member of the NDC.”
“What happened was unpardonable,” she lamented, adding the action caused unimaginable pain to her and her family.
She could not bear the pain caused her and her family and eventually had to leave the country to pursue her career outside the shores of Ghana.
Such a person could not be described as a friend who she would hesitate to prosecute provided there is enough evidence to do so, she opined.
