Airtel Ghana has donated a number of books, school bags and other teaching and learning materials to the teachers and children of Paladium Square Basic School in Accra in another demonstration of Airtel’s commitment to help develop the children of Ghana through education. The donation is part of Airtel Ghana’s “Build Our Nation” initiative which supports schools with limited teaching resources. The donation was made in response to a request made by management of the basic school to Airtel Ghana, to join individuals and other corporate bodies to support the upgrading of the deprived school to an ultra-modern one. Mr. Donald Gwira, Head of Corporate Communications and External Affairs at Airtel Ghana, who presented the items, said “Airtel is driven by the purpose of enriching lives and making very meaningful impact in the lives of people in our environment. We have always insisted that for a country like Ghana to develop into a prosperous nation, it must have a strong foundation in education hence his Company's decision to make education a priority.” Mrs. A. Yawson, the Managing Principal of the Paladium Basic school who received the items, expressed her appreciation and explained that the school was a deprived one that needed a lot of assistance and appealed to more companies to consider providing assistance to get shelves, tables and chairs for the school’s library to enable the books to be properly cared for. She also appealed to Airtel to create alternative livelihood programmes for the staff of Airtel Ghana to volunteer their expertise in various areas like teaching which would help them cater for their wards and add some value to the school. In a related development, Airtel has donated a total of five LCD television sets to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to help in the refurbishment of the VVIP and Jubilee Lounges of the Kotoka International Airport. The presentation was made at a ceremony at the premises of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration in Accra. The television sets will replace what is currently placed in both the arrival and departure halls for VVIPs. Philip Sowah, the Managing Director of Airtel Ghana said “Airtel has been very good allies with the ministry and we believe this refurbishment process when completed will inure to our benefits too as we accord our guests that befitting status at the gateways of our dear country”. The Deputy Minister in charge of the ministry Ambassador Chris Kpodo, thanked Airtel and explained that the television sets will help to boost facilities at KIA and enhance the image of the airport. He also said that government alone could not provide all the needs of the institution and its work and urged other stakeholders to emulate Airtel’s example and make similar donations towards same.
