Minister of Roads and Highways, Joe Gidisu has labeled NPP’s flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo as dishonest, over his corruption charges leveled against the government.
The NPP flagbearer addressing students at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on corruption, accused the NDC government of inflating cost of constructing roads in the country in just four years.
Basing his argument of corruption on the 5.7km Ofankor-Achimota Road, Nana Addo said the NPP was constructing that same stretch of road with GH¢43.2 million, but, after a 3-year delay, it has been completed by the NDC for GH¢137 million. That amount, he says, is only GH¢20 million less than the GH¢158 million the NPP was going to spend on the 31.7km Nsawam-Suhum stretch, to build a dual carriageway with asphalt concrete surfacing and an interchange at Suhum.
“Public contracts are now routinely awarded by sole sourcing. Very worrying is the fact that this sole sourcing regime is most prevalent in contracts awarded from two key ministries, Education and Roads” Nana Addo bellowed.
But, speaking on Asempa Fm’s Ekosii-Sen on Thursday, Joe Gidisu noted that the comments from the NPP leader was a propagandist talk, adding that “he was just pouring dust in the eyes of Ghanaians”.
The Member of Parliament for Central Tongu asserted that the NPP government at the time awarded the contract with line diagram and that due diligence was not done.
“Nana Addo is very dishonest because they awarded these road contracts with line diagram. We have come and reviewed it through proper designing before it was completed so it raised the cost. The whole process of awarding the Ofakor-Achimota road was done any how so Nana Addo has no basis to charge the government with inflated cost. Nana Addo should at least be honest to himself and Ghanaians” Joe Gidisu said.
He stressed that the NDC government had done far better in the roads sector in four years than the NPP in eight years and when given another term, more will follow.
“We have done many things in the roads sector but we hope to get a second term of office to prove what we can do. The likes of Nana Addo can go about lying to people but we are focused”.
He challenged the NPP and its flagbearer to come and tell Ghanaians how they awarded the contract and why they were unable to complete it.
“I challenge Nana Akufo-Addo to come out with the facts on the roads. He failed to give Ghanaians the historical backgrounds of the project but jumped into the fray by charging the government with corruption. It is sad. Nana was professionally dishonest on the issue of the road construction in the country”.
